Kickboxing has evolved in different ways around the world, with Japanese K-1 style kickboxing and Dutch/European kickboxing developing distinct tactical approaches.
In this video, European K-1 champion Tai Terada breaks down some of the major technical and strategic differences between the Japanese and Dutch styles of kickboxing, explaining how fighters approach:
• range and distance management
• progressive combinations and tempo
• calf kick usage and low-kick strategies
• tactical fight IQ and shot selection
Tai Terada is the founder and head coach of MAJI – Art of Fight Japanese Kickboxing Eindhoven, a newly opened gym bringing authentic Japanese kickboxing methodology to the Netherlands. The academy focuses on technical precision, discipline and structured progression, blending Japanese fight philosophy with the efficiency of Dutch striking systems.
The gym’s philosophy centres around respect, discipline and progress, with training rooted in the evolution of Kyokushin-influenced striking that helped shape modern K-1 competition.
Tai himself brings a unique perspective to this discussion. Born into Japanese Kyokushin culture but forged through years of kickboxing competition and coaching in Europe, he regularly trains and works alongside elite fighters and coaches including:
Takumi Terada – K-1 featherweight world champion, who captured the title in 2024 after defeating Taito Gunji by decision.
Yuki Yoza – highly regarded as one of the best Japanese fighters competing in the world today.
Masakazu Watanabe – respected Japanese trainer associated with Vasileus Gym and the K-1 circuit.
The MAJI – Art of Fight gym launched in early 2026 and aims to introduce what it calls the “Japanese New Wave” of kickboxing, combining Kyokushin-derived toughness and blisteringly fast paced Boxing with modern striking efficiency and technical precision.
